Milton Michael Rajonsky, più noto come "Shorty" Rogers (Great Barrington, 14 aprile 1924 – Van Nuys, 7 novembre 1994^[1]^[2]), è stato un trombettista statunitense di musica jazz, tra i creatori e principali esponenti del West Coast Jazz. Suonava sia la tromba che il flicorno soprano ed era molto ricercato per la sua abilità come arrangiatore.

Biografia

Completati gli studi musicali dedicati all'apprendimento della tromba, della composizione e dell'orchestrazione, viene scritturato per il suo primo ingaggio professionale nel 1942 (anche se per poche settimane) in seno all'orchestra di Will Bradley; in seguito suona nella band di Red Norvo (1943), nell'orchestra di Woody Herman (primo gregge), con Charlie Barnet (1947), nuovamente con Herman nel secondo gregge (Herd) (1947-1949) e con Stan Kenton (1950-1951). Il trasferimento sulla costa ovest degli Stati Uniti lo porta a collaborare con i maggiori esponenti dello stile West Coast come Howard Rumsey, Jimmy Giuffre, Shelly Manne con cui fonda la formazione denominata The Giants. Rogers ricopre contemporaneamente incarichi presso alcune case discografiche sia come direttore musicale (alla Atlantic Records) che come produttore (RCA Victor) ed è richiestissimo anche come compositore di colonne sonore di film, come L'uomo dal braccio d'oro e di telefilm come Starsky & Hutch)^[3]. All'inizio degli anni ottanta ritorna a suonare e nel 1989 riforma con Bud Shank i Lighthouse All Stars. Muore a Van Nuys, California, il 7 novembre 1994.
