Waiting for the Sun adalah album studio ketiga dari the Doors. Terdiri dari 11 lagu yang direkam antara Januari dan Mei 1968 di TTG Studios di Los Angeles. Dirilis oleh Elektra Records pada 3 Juli 1968, album ini menjadi satu-satunya album nomor satu milik the Doors (memuncaki tangga lagu selama empat minggu), dan menyertakan singel nomor satu, Hello, I Love You (selama dua minggu sejak3 Agustus 1968). Single pertama yang dirilis dari rekaman adalah The Unknown Soldier, yang memuncak di nomor 39 Billboard Hot 100. Album ini menjadi hit pertama the Doors di Inggris.

Setelah merilis dua rekaman yang diambil dari kumpulan besar lagu yang dibuat sebelumnya, the Doors mulai berimprovisasi untuk album mini ketiga pada akhir 1967. Karena kekurangan bahan, band mengalami sindrom album ketiga, yang berarti kesulitan sebuah band untuk memiliki stok komposisi yang bagus, mampu mengisi disk ketiga berturut-turut.^[2] Sesi rekaman juga terbukti sulit untuk grup karena Jim Morrison kecanduan alkoholisme.

Album tersebut memicu reaksi beragam saat dirilis, dengan banyak yang mencemooh keragaman dan kualitas penulisan lagunya sebagai hal yang merugikan dan tidak konsisten. Namun, itu telah menarik penilaian yang lebih simpatik untuk suaranya yang lebih lembut dan eksperimen dengan genre lain.^[3]
